HempSquatch is an education and awareness campaign promoting and advocating for the myriad, sustainable and beneficial uses of industrial and agricultural hemp. Through education and awareness, HempSquatch seeks to clarify the misconceptions about hemp, specifically the distinctions between industrial hemp versus recreational pot. HempSquatch’s mission statement includes promoting hemp as sustainable agriculture: an alternative to trees. HempSquatch was founded by my friend and business partner Megan Guppy and myself in 2013.
We wanted to rebrand hemp. Give it a fresh face, not tied to the Reefer Madness campaigns of the 1930’s that incorrectly lumped hemp in with marijuana as the demonic scourge, but as a viable, sustainable alternative to tree-based industries, as well as a nutritious food source; many applications in construction; fabrics and textiles; and the many economic opportunities and jobs that can be created in farming and retail that can come as a result of education, and legalization.
