This playlist includes songs composed, arranged and recorded for “SNAP!”, an independent short film written. and directed by Zachary Brown of Conflux Studio in Bellingham Washington. Currently in post-production, final running time should be under 10 minutes. “SNAP” will premiere mid-January 2018 in Bellingham.
The SNAP! storyline traces the adventure of Sam, an ordinary kid walking around a bustling downtown one summer’s day, and through a series of unexpected events — and one exceptional talent — he becomes a finalist in the fictional “The Kid’s Got Talent” show.
NOTES ABOUT THE SONGS:
“Kids Got Talent Theme” is the theme song for the fictional kid’s talent show of the same name. We wanted something bright that contrasts with the flow of the movie, it comes at a moment of dark and light juxtaposition in the movie flow. I invoked some of the rockin’ TV theme songs of my youth—I like the theme to “The Monkees.” I wanted our theme song to kick it out even more. The addition of crowd noise at select moments is fun, its like adding another instrument.
“Sam’s Groove” – I wanted a distinct bass line, like the old Barney Miller theme.
The rest of the pieces are more mood pieces.
The film was shot during the PNW 2017 summer eclipse at various locations in downtown Bellingham—including half a day inside the historic Mount Baker Theatre—August 21st and 22nd.
My work on the soundscape, sound effects and music was all completed in a month’s time, October 17-November 17, 2017.
I worked directly with Zachary at his Conflux Studio for about 6 days over a month, which was truly collaborative and efficient for us as a team to try out, and test out ideas. Especially for the first half of the film, where he wanted to invoke moods of mystery, uncertainty, a little bit of dread, and some deep ‘spiritual’ presence or feel.
This playlist includes pieces that made the cut for the film—and others that didn’t. Appearing in the song are:
“Theme Song” “Meditation” “Crosswalk Ascent/Crosswalk Slight Return” will be in the film. Possibly “Sam’s Groove.”
I wanted to try the two piano pieces, but they did not fit the intended tone and storyline of the film.
Much of the sound effects and composition I worked out playing ‘live’ to an edit projected onto a wall at Conflux Studio. The ‘band/segue’ piece is a variant/send-up of the ‘Kid’s Got Talent’ theme song.
I also got to play a minor part in the film (1st acting experience ever!), of a TV producer who helps audition prospective contestants on the fictional children’s talent show, “Kid’s Got Talent.” (My character, as a child, is still the only 2-time winner of “Kid’s Got Talent lol)
